In 1994, Michael Miscoe invented Hazelnut-Shell Briquettes – a non-wood, non-charcoal briquette made from the shells of the hazelnut, a crop bountiful in Oregon. Originally they were made in the Oregon countryside on a friend’s farm, and are now crafted at our facility in Portland, Oregon.
Lilly’s first hummus was made with Michael’s freshly grilled red bell peppers, and it proved to be an addicting flavor that became quite popular at the Portland Farmer’s Market. Roasting fresh veggies with our hazelnut-shell briquettes imparts a rich, smokiness which is unique to the Northwest. They contain no nut meats, and foods cooked with them are safe for those with nut allergies.
Oregon Harvest’s Hazelnut-Shell Briquettes are made from a renewable resource – the same trees year after year! Today four varieties of Lilly’s Hummus contain fresh roasted veggies with our briquettes; Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Jalapeño, Smoked Tomato & Basil, and our festive Black Bean hummus, which contains a festive blend of all three roasted veggies.
