F.A.Q.

Frequently asked questions!

What is hummus?
Hummus is a dip, traditionally made from pureed chickpeas. The main ingredient – chickpeas, and olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, sesame tahini, are often referred to as “super foods,” making this delicious bean spread ideal for inclusion in healthful, clean eating diets. Lilly’s Hummus is also naturally gluten-free and an amazing source of plant-based protein.

What’s so special about kettle-cooking the organic chickpeas?
Lilly & company decided long ago, to make hummus the traditional way: by soaking our organic chickpeas overnight, then cooking them in kettles. Over time, we’ve been approached by ingredient suppliers which present bags of pre-cooked chickpeas in slurry, which would introduce far too much waste and unwanted packaging (not to mention extra sodium). By cooking our own chickpeas, we are able to reduce waste, and to control the quality of hummus. Other methods known are to use a chickpea powder, which also yields a less acceptable flavor.

Is Lilly’s Hummus gluten-free?
Yes, we do not store, or use, ingredients containing gluten in our facility.

Is Lilly’s Hummus vegan, and dairy free?
Yes, both vegan and dairy free. In the past, our facility used to be a meat processing plant, which we are proud to say now produces only 100% vegan foods.

Do all of your hummus flavors contain sesame tahini?
About half of our hummus flavors contain sesame tahini, and half do not;
With tahini – Classic, Roasted Garlic, Kalamata Olive, Cracked Pepper, and Sriracha.
Without tahini – Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Jalapeno, Smoked Tomato & Basil, and Black Bean.

How long will 12 oz tubs of Lilly’s Hummus last in my refrigerator, and can they be frozen?
They will be good up until the date printed on the lid of the container. After opened, should last in the refrigerator one week. Our tubs can be frozen, but hummus may take on a slightly rubbery texture after thawed from a deep freeze.

Are your containers recyclable?
Yes, 100% recyclable, and reusable.

Where is Lilly’s Hummus produced?
Our facility resides in Portland, Oregon, with acreage devoted to native plant and animal habitat.

Is Lilly a real person?
Yes she is! A native of our home base in Portland, Oregon, and an avid artist and enthusiastic foodie!

How are your roasted, smoky veggie hummus varieties made?
We roast fresh red bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and tomatoes with Hazelnut-Shell Briquettes, which we also produce! They’re made from a renewable resource (the shell of the Oregon hazelnut), and contain no wood, or petroleum products! They impart the uniquely Northwestern smokiness, our veggie hummus varieties are known for! Those with nut allergies take heart – they contain no nut meats.

How long do your shelf-stable single-serve hummus cups last?
Lilly’s hummus singles last 6 months without refrigeration. The expiration date is printed on the container, and/or their 4-pack sleeve. These singles come in four flavors: Classic, Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Garlic, and Smoked Tomato & Basil.

Is there anything I can make with Lilly’s Hummus besides its use as a nutritious dip?
